South African Edtech startup, Koa Academy, is the 2023 MEST challenge winner. This accolade comes with a $50,000 equity investment. The news was announced at the MEST Africa Challenge (MAC) finale in Accra, Ghana. Koa Academy emerged top after a competitive pitch battle among other Africa tech innovators.
MEST Africa is a leading Pan-African tech entrepreneurship training program, seed fund, and incubator. In its latest innovator challenge, young tech companies, still in the early stages of development, threw their hats in the ring for the competition.
The startups were evaluated on their ideas, potential for growth, and the strength of their teams. Tech companies drawn from Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, and Kenya battled it out in the final round. These finalists presented their solutions and business plans to a panel of judges, made up of investors and industry leaders.
This year’s winner is an online education startup. It provides engaging and interactive courses for students from grades 4 to 12. Koa Academy prioritizes both accessibility and engagement, making education available to everyone in South Africa, regardless of location. The startup impressed the judges at the MAC Finale showcasing significant market potential, revenue growth, and social impact.
“Amidst the challenges, this journey has brought us closer to others across the continent, forging relationships and connections that fuel our mission even further. We are reminded that we’re not alone in this endeavor and are incredibly grateful for the support and learning opportunities this challenge has presented,” said Lauren Anderson, Co-founder and CEO, Koa Academy.
MEST Africa’s Portfolio Advisor, Ashwin Ravichandran, applauded the winner and finalists for their remarkable accomplishments and unwavering spirit. Ravichandran also expressed MEST Africa’s gratitude to Absa Bank Ghana for their crucial role in making the challenge a success.
