Starlink kits in Kenya are now cheaper by 34.07 in Kenya after a price drop offer that is set to last until August 14. SpaceX the company that owns the Satellite internet service provider has dropped prices from the current KES 45,500 to KES 29,999.
The price drop comes less than a year after Starlink launched in Kenya in July 2023. Hardware cost has been a primary barrier for many Kenyans seeking the services. At launch, starlink kits retail price was KES 89,000. Earlier this year, the company had a limited-time offer until June 10, 2024, reducing the standard Starlink hardware price in Kenya to KES 39,500.
To further grow in the Kenyan market, the company recently introduced an internet plan that starts as low as KES 1,300 per month. This offers subscribers a 50GB data package. This “Starlink Standard – 50GB” plan allows high-speed internet access at any fixed residential location in the country. A 100 mbps unlimited plan is priced at KES 6,500.
A drop-in price of Starlink Kits is having positive effects on the sales numbers. In addition, the company began selling its kits via local retail store, Naivas. This came months after a partnership with ecommerce platform Jumia made the kits more accessible to Kenyans.
Based on the latest data from the Communications Authority (CA), Kenya’s ICT watchdog, the number of Satellite internet users in the country has been growing at a high rate. A paltry 405 individuals were utilizing satellite internet in the country three months before Starlink’s arrival. This figure exploded to 1,354 within two months of its launch, and then more than tripled to over 4,808.
Satellite internet offers a solution for customers in rural areas cut off from traditional broadband services such as Safaricom Home and Jamii Telcom.
