Airtel and Starlink Launch Africa’s First Satellite Mobile Service in DRC

Airtel Africa and Starlink have launched commercial satellite-to-mobile service in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the first such deployment anywhere on the continent.

Customers with compatible LTE Android phones can now send WhatsApp messages and SMS from areas with no terrestrial signal, provided they can see open sky and have an active Airtel DRC data bundle or roaming enabled.

The DRC launch caps a partnership that has moved in fairly quick, deliberate steps. Airtel Africa and SpaceX first announced their collaboration in May 2025, when SpaceX had already secured operating licenses in nine of Airtel’s fourteen African markets, DRC among them.

That early framing was mostly about broadband: satellite backhaul for rural cell towers, plus connectivity for schools and health centers that terrestrial infrastructure had never reached.

By March 2026, the partnership had shifted from paperwork to a working pilot. Airtel and SpaceX tested Starlink’s direct-to-cell technology in Kenya, confirming that ordinary 4G smartphones could connect to satellites in dead zones without any hardware changes.

Those tests covered WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, maps, and mobile money transactions through the Airtel app, though the service stayed limited to light-data use.

DRC now becomes the market where that pilot turns into a paid product, and the choice makes sense given the country’s geography. Much of DRC sits far from any cell tower, cut off by dense forest and a road network that doesn’t reach many communities.

Airtel is positioning the service for logistics operators, health workers, farmers, and humanitarian organizations who need to stay reachable outside network coverage, along with emergency communication when terrestrial infrastructure goes down.

Speaking on the launch, Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar called the commercial debut of Starlink Mobile a major milestone for Airtel Africa, achieved through its partnership with SpaceX.

“By combining Airtel’s terrestrial network with Starlink’s satellite technology, we are extending essential connectivity beyond the limits of mobile infrastructure.”

He also credited DRC’s telecoms ministry and regulator for clearing the path to launch, a reminder that country-by-country regulatory approval remains the real bottleneck for scaling the service elsewhere.

New customers get a 30-day free trial through the My Airtel App, after which access continues through eligible data bundles. Support for Apple devices is still coming.

Airtel says expansion beyond DRC depends on securing similar regulatory sign-off in its other markets, which suggests Kenya, where the technology was first tested, could be next in line once approvals clear.
