Today, the creators of ChatGPT, OpenAI, made the ChatGPT desktop App for windows accessible to all users. When it was initially rolled out last month, the desktop app was availalbe only to ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users.
Further, OpenAI has announced new updates to the app that are based on user feedback. For windows users, the company stated, “We’ve listened to your feedback and added features like faster access to ChatGPT with the Alt + Space shortcut, a companion window to make it easy to pick up where you left off, the ability to share screenshots, Advanced Voice mode and more”.
A recent update, prior to today’s, enables users to snap a photo with their PC or laptop’s webcam and attach it directly to their ChatGPT conversation. Additionally, users are able adjust text size (scaling) using the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl + and Ctrl –. The features are meant to encourage users to stay on the app for majority of their tasks.
MacOS Update Targets Developers
OpenAI has also announced new features for MacOS users. The ChatGPT desktop app for macOS is now able to integrate with apps on a user’s desktop. In this early beta, the ChatGPT App can interact with and access common development tools such as VS Code, XCode, Terminal, and iTerm2. Notably, all these integrations have to be permitted by users first.
These new macOS features are only available to Plus and Team users. OpenAI plans to roll them out to Enterprise and Edu users in a few weeks.
The integrations are tailored to suit developers who have been heavy users of the AI platform. Alexander Embiricos, product lead with the ChatGPT desktop team, noted that one of the biggest user trends is copy-pasting text or code generated from ChatGPT to other applications.
“We wanted to start integration with [integrated development environments] IDEs because we know a lot of our customers are developers, as we were seeing a lot of copy-pasting text-based material from the app to other platforms,” he stated.
