Ukraine’s leading mobile operator, Kyivstar, has teamed up with Starlink to introduce space-based mobile services, marking a significant step forward in the telecommunications sector.
The deal, announced on December 30, 2024, will enable direct-to-cell satellite connectivity across the country, giving Ukrainian citizens and businesses access to mobile phone signals directly from space.
This collaboration is especially crucial as Ukraine continues to face disruptions in its mobile network due to the ongoing conflict. Traditional cell towers and infrastructure have been severely impacted, making communication a challenge.
The new satellite service aims to fill this gap by providing seamless mobile connectivity, even in the most remote or war-torn areas, where conventional networks are non-existent.
What is Direct-to-Cell Service?
Space-based mobile service is a game-changer. Instead of relying on cell towers, this technology beams phone signals straight from space. That means no more dropped calls or poor signals in remote or conflict zones.
For Ukraine, where mobile networks have often been disrupted by the ongoing conflict, this technology is especially crucial. It will allow people to stay connected no matter what, offering a lifeline for families, businesses, and emergency services.
Ukraine will be one of the first countries in the world to get this advanced service. Kyivstar, in partnership with Starlink’s parent company, VEON, is taking a major leap by rolling out this new mobile connectivity. It’s not just about internet access anymore; Starlink is now helping bring real-time mobile communication to places that need it the most.
Where is Direct-to-Cell Mobile Service Available?
Starlink has already been offering satellite internet services in many parts of the world, particularly in regions with limited access to traditional broadband infrastructure. The introduction of mobile services is the next logical step for Starlink, as it aims to extend its satellite capabilities beyond just internet access.
Starlink’s existing network of satellites, designed to provide high-speed internet globally, will now also support mobile phone services. The service has already been rolled out in several regions, including parts of North America, Europe, and Africa.
As of late 2024, Starlink has been focusing on expanding its presence in countries with poor or non-existent cellular infrastructure, as well as in regions affected by natural disasters or conflicts.
Starlink’s expansion into direct-to-cell services is poised to revolutionize mobile communication, especially in disaster-prone regions. In places where traditional mobile networks have been destroyed, Starlink’s satellite network will provide a lifeline, ensuring that people can stay connected and communicate when it matters most.
As of now, the space-based mobile service is still being rolled out globally, with full-scale availability expected in various parts of the world in the coming years.
While the direct-to-cell service in Ukraine is expected to roll out in phases, the full capabilities are expected to be available by 2025. However, Kyivstar’s partnership with Starlink is just the beginning.
The future of satellite-based mobile services looks bright, with plans to expand into additional countries and regions, further bridging the global digital divide. Starlink is set to bring reliable mobile connectivity to areas previously underserved or cut off by traditional mobile infrastructure.
