Apple’s latest AirPods Pro 3 launch introduced real-time conversation translation powered by Apple Intelligence. However, customers in the European Union will not be able to use it just yet.
The company confirmed it is withholding the rollout in the region because of regulatory concerns tied to privacy and AI rules.
The translation tool is designed to work with the newest AirPods Pro 3 and compatible iPhones, allowing users to listen to live speech in another language and hear an instant translation in their earbuds.
In the EU, however, regulators have set stricter conditions on how voice data and AI systems can be processed. The General Data Protection Regulation and the newly adopted AI Act demand strong safeguards for personal data, explicit consent for processing, and transparency about how algorithms operate.
Apple is said to be evaluating whether its translation system can meet those requirements before it becomes available to European customers.
“Live translation with AirPods is not available if you are in the EU and your Apple account country or region is also in the EU,” an Apple support page reads.
For now, anyone with an Apple account registered in an EU country will find the feature unavailable, even if they purchase the latest devices. Unlike North America and Asia that has fewer barriers, the EU has staked its reputation on being the toughest watchdog for digital rights.
Apple is likely taking a cautious approach to avoid fines or legal disputes. The company has already come under scrutiny in the region for its App Store practices and data policies.
