OpenAI appears to be preparing an advertising system for ChatGPT, based on new details discovered in the latest ChatGPT Android beta.
As spotted by Tibor Blaho on X, the beta version 1.2025.329 includes references to an “ads feature,” with strings like “bazaar content,” “search ad,” and “search ads carousel.”
While these code references don’t guarantee a public rollout, they strongly suggest that OpenAI is internally testing ad formats and placements within the app.

These references did not exist in earlier versions, indicating that ads are moving from a long-term idea to a real feature under development.
Since launching in 2022, OpenAI has relied heavily on ChatGPT Plus subscription revenue and API licensing to support its rapid growth.
However, running large AI models remains costly, and analysts continue to point to compute expenses as a major challenge for profitability across the AI sector.
Introducing ads would give OpenAI a third revenue stream without adjusting subscription prices or restricting access for free users. This would likely help them support more generous usage limits on the free tier.
Where Are Ads Likely to Appear on ChatGPT?
The leaked strings point toward ads being placed in very specific contexts rather than throughout regular conversational chats.
References such as “search ad” and “search ads carousel” suggest that ads will appear around search-style answers, product lookups, and recommendation queries, essentially the parts of ChatGPT that function like a search engine.
The mention of “bazaar content” further implies marketplace-like presentations, possibly in the form of product cards or shopping carousels similar to what users see on Google or Amazon.
OpenAI’s earlier hints suggest a careful introduction of advertising that won’t disrupt everyday interactions. This move fits into a broader industry shift, as major tech companies increasingly integrate ads into their AI products.
Google now displays advertisements inside AI Overviews and has discussed new ad formats designed specifically for Gemini responses. Microsoft’s Copilot already shows ads in chat when users ask shopping or commercially relevant questions.
Meanwhile, Perplexity AI includes sponsored follow-up suggestions beside its answers. As AI assistants evolve into hybrid search-and-recommendation engines, monetizing through ads is becoming the industry standard rather than an exception.
Although OpenAI has not made an official announcement yet, this Android beta leak offers the clearest indication so far that ChatGPT ads are on the way.
