WhatsApp is preparing to launch voice and video calling directly in its web browser interface, ending one of the platform’s most glaring feature gaps.
According to WABetaInfo, a reliable tracker of WhatsApp updates, the calling features are currently in development and haven’t reached beta testers yet, but they’re coming soon.
The web client will support both individual and group calls. Users will be able to participate in group conversations with up to 32 people, though WhatsApp will likely start with a smaller cap of 8 or 16 participants while testing the feature before scaling up.
This will be good news for people using shared or work computers where installing desktop applications isn’t allowed or practical. Instead of being limited to text-based communication on WhatsApp Web, users will have full calling capabilities without downloading anything.
The web version will match what’s already available on mobile apps. Users will be able to generate shareable links for calls and choose whether they’re for voice or video. There’s also support planned for scheduling calls ahead of time, complete with names and descriptions.
WhatsApp is building in proper notification handling for the web client, so users can manage incoming calls and alerts directly through their browser. This includes the ability to receive call notifications and control how they appear.
The update brings WhatsApp Web closer to feature parity with the mobile and desktop applications. While calling was partially previewed last year, group support was still in early stages. WhatsApp has since expanded the basic calling infrastructure to work properly with group chats.
When Is It Coming
Meta hasn’t announced a specific release date. Given how long users have been requesting this feature and its current development status, it’s expected to arrive within weeks rather than months.
While services like FaceTime already allow seamless device switching, they’re restricted to Apple’s ecosystem. WhatsApp’s cross-platform support across Android, iOS, and now web browsers makes it as a more universal option for users who need flexibility across different devices and operating systems.
