TikTok has started adding a microphone icon to its comment box. Tap and hold the icon to record a short voice message, then release it to post the recording as a comment alongside the usual text and emoji replies.
The feature has been moving through testing since May, when users first spotted it before TikTok said anything official. By July, the company had confirmed a wider rollout, though it’s still gradual, so two people on the same app version in the same country can have different experiences.
That caution makes sense given what a public voice comment section invites. TikTok has built in moderation tools for both sides.
Creators can turn voice comments on or off, restrict them to followers, or delete replies. Listeners can report or mute a comment, and TikTok says filters catch harmful or infringing audio.
Privacy researchers are asking how long recordings are kept and whether they feed into moderation or model training, questions TikTok hasn’t answered.
Voice comments also transcribe themselves. Post one, and a “Transcribing…” label appears under the waveform, then flips into the actual text within moments, sitting right under the play button with no tap required.
That puts TikTok ahead of YouTube’s own test. YouTube tried something similar in late 2024, letting select creators record spoken replies with a transcript button underneath, but that required a tap.
TikTok converts the audio automatically, which helps accessibility and anyone scrolling with the sound off.
The platform hasn’t said anything about transcription accuracy, language support, or whether users can edit or hide the text. It’s already live, running quietly in the background of every voice comment as it goes up.
Voice comments fit a pattern TikTok has built for over a year. Voice notes landed in DMs in 2025, capped at 60 seconds. TikTok also added voice and video calling inside DMs, letting users call through their profiles without swapping numbers.
Each move pulls TikTok closer to WhatsApp, iMessage, and Instagram.
If the microphone icon hasn’t shown up in your comment box yet, that’s not a bug. TikTok is just working through its rollout list, one region at a time.
