Forex trading has become increasingly accessible across Africa, with traders in Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana and other markets using smartphones and online platforms to access global financial markets.

But while technology has made trading easier to access, choosing the wrong broker can still be expensive.

Two forex brokers that advertise identical minimum spreads of 0.0 pips, have cost of trading that could be significantly different. Over hundreds of transactions, even a small difference in pricing can add up.

For African traders looking to reduce trading costs in 2027, understanding average spreads, commission, and execution quality could make a meaningful difference. Here are eight forex brokers worth comparing, starting with those that recorded the lowest average spreads.

Low Average Spreads Forex Brokers in 2027

The following brokers were included in a recent pricing comparison conducted by independent analytics provider Datalyst.

The study measured average spreads across seven major forex pairs: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD, NZD/USD, USD/JPY, USD/CAD and USD/CHF and daily market rollover periods were excluded from the measurements.

RankBrokerAverage Spread
1TabTrade0.04 pips
2Exness0.10 pips
3IC Markets0.17 pips
4Pepperstone0.18 pips
5CMC Markets0.23 pips
6FxPro0.49 pips
7XM0.74 pips
8IG1.48 pips

1. TabTrade

TabTrade recorded the lowest average spreads in the comparison, at 0.04 pips across the seven measured currency pairs. The regulated forex and CFD broker offers an Edge account with spreads starting from 0.0 pips and a commission of $3.50 per side per standard lot.

For traders who execute frequently, consistently tight spreads can make a substantial difference to overall transaction costs.

TabTrade also offers MetaTrader 5, trading infrastructure hosted at Equinix LD5 in London, and reported average execution speeds below 30 milliseconds.

Beyond forex, its platform provides access to metals, commodities, indices and share CFDs, alongside copy trading through TabTrade Social.

TabTrade (Mauritius) Ltd is incorporated in Mauritius (Company Number: 236339) and is regulated by the Financial Services Commission (FSC) under Licence Number GB26206419, and traders can independently verify its licence information.

2. Exness

Exness offers several trading account structures, including commission-based accounts with tighter spreads. Its platform options and range of payment methods make it a familiar choice among international retail traders.

Traders should compare the total cost of its different account types, especially where lower spreads are accompanied by commissions.

3. IC Markets

IC Markets offers raw-spread trading accounts and supports popular platforms including MetaTrader and cTrader.

Its pricing structure is designed to appeal to traders who prioritize tight spreads, automated trading and frequent execution. Commissions vary by platform and account, making total transaction costs an important consideration.

4. Pepperstone

Pepperstone provides Standard and Razor accounts, allowing traders to choose between spread-based and commission-based pricing.

It supports multiple trading platforms and automated trading strategies.

Its Razor account is particularly relevant when comparing raw spreads, although commissions must be included in any meaningful cost calculation.

5. CMC Markets

CMC Markets combines forex trading with access to a broad range of financial instruments.

Its proprietary trading technology includes advanced charting and analytical tools. Traders should compare the spreads available on their preferred currency pairs and review any account-specific pricing arrangements.

6. FxPro

FxPro offers forex and CFD trading across several platforms, including MetaTrader and cTrader.

Its account structures include different combinations of spreads and commissions. The broker may appeal to traders seeking a choice of execution platforms and account pricing models.

7. XM

XM provides forex and CFD trading alongside educational resources and multiple account options.

Its services cater to a range of experience levels, including traders who are still learning how financial markets operate. Spreads and other trading conditions depend on the selected account and the jurisdiction in which the account is opened.

8. IG

IG is an established international trading provider with proprietary technology, research and access to numerous financial markets.

Its platform offers a range of analytical and risk management tools. Although its average spread was higher in the referenced comparison, traders may still find value in its broader platform features and available services.

How Much Difference Can Lower Spreads Make?

A spread might look insignificant when expressed as a fraction of a pip, but the cost becomes more noticeable with larger trading volumes. For EUR/USD, one pip on a standard lot is typically worth approximately $10.

Consider two hypothetical brokers:

  • Broker A charges an average spread of 1.0 pip with no commission.
  • Broker B charges an average spread of 0.1 pips with a $7 round-trip commission.

For a standard-lot trade, Broker A’s spread cost would be approximately $10. Broker B’s spread cost would be approximately $1, plus $7 commission, bringing the total to $8. That represents a $2 difference on a single transaction.

Across 100 standard-lot transactions, the difference would reach approximately $200, assuming the same pricing conditions throughout. This illustrates why advertised minimum spreads are not enough to determine which broker offers better value.

TabTrade’s average of 0.04 pips is a useful example of competitive raw pricing, but traders should include its Edge account commission when comparing it with commission-free accounts.

Why Average Spreads Matter More Than Advertised Minimums

Many forex brokers promote spreads starting from 0.0 pips. While these claims can be accurate, they describe the lowest available spread rather than what traders will necessarily experience throughout the day.

Spreads fluctuate according to liquidity, market activity and economic announcements. During the overlap between the London and New York trading sessions, major currency pairs generally benefit from deeper liquidity and tighter pricing.

During quieter periods or major news events, spreads can widen significantly.

Average spreads provide a more representative measure of pricing over time. Independent measurement is particularly useful because it allows traders to compare brokers using observed market data rather than relying exclusively on promotional claims.

However, comparisons should use equivalent account types, the same currency pairs and similar measurement periods.

What African Traders Should Look for Beyond Spreads

Trading costs matter everywhere, but African traders may face additional considerations involving local payments, currency conversion and regulatory arrangements.

Kenya: Mobile Payments and Regulation

Kenya’s established mobile money ecosystem has made digital financial services more accessible.

For forex traders, the availability of convenient funding and withdrawal methods can be just as important as competitive spreads. Traders should also verify whether a broker is authorized by Kenya’s Capital Markets Authority where local authorization is required.

An overseas brokerage license does not automatically constitute Kenyan regulatory approval.

Nigeria: Currency Conversion and Withdrawals

Nigerian traders should pay particular attention to account currencies and conversion charges.

When deposits originate in naira but trading accounts are denominated in US dollars, exchange rate differences and payment provider fees can affect the total cost of trading.

Reliable withdrawal arrangements and clear processing conditions are also important.

South Africa: Regulatory Oversight

South Africa has a developed financial services sector overseen by regulators including the Financial Sector Conduct Authority.

Traders should verify the legal entity providing their account and understand which regulatory protections apply. The availability of rand-denominated funding may also help reduce unnecessary conversion costs.

Ghana and Other African Markets

In Ghana and other African countries, broker availability, payment services and applicable regulations can differ considerably. A broker accepting clients in one African country may not necessarily offer accounts in another.

Before registering, traders should confirm their eligibility, available funding methods and applicable legal protections.

Technology Is Making Forex Trading More Competitive

Behind every forex trading platform is an infrastructure connecting traders to pricing, liquidity and execution systems.

Modern brokers increasingly rely on financial data centres, low-latency connectivity and automated trading technology to process orders efficiently. TabTrade, for example, uses infrastructure at Equinix LD5 in London, a major financial connectivity hub.

Fast execution can help reduce processing delays, although it cannot eliminate slippage or guarantee that every order will execute at the requested price.

Mobile trading platforms have also changed how African traders interact with financial markets. MetaTrader 5 and other applications allow users to monitor live prices, analyse charts and manage positions directly from their smartphones.

Meanwhile, independent analytics providers are making broker pricing easier to compare using historical market data. These developments are increasing transparency in an industry where trading costs have traditionally been difficult for retail clients to evaluate.

Choosing the Right Broker for 2027

Before choosing a broker, African traders should compare average spreads, commissions, execution quality, available platforms, funding methods and regulatory protections.

For traders looking to reduce transaction costs, independently measured average spreads are a great starting point.

Ultimately, the goal is to find a broker that combines competitive total trading costs with reliable technology, transparent conditions and services available in each country.
