While TECNO has its book-style foldable with the Phantom V Fold and the yet-to-be-launched clamshell-style foldable with the Phantom V Flip, the company isn’t stopping just there yet.
TECNO is now working on rollable smartphones.
These phones hide away the screen inside the phone and extend when needed for large screen uses.
TECNO is following in the footsteps of Motorola and LG and are now showing its version of a rollable smartphone called Phantom Ultimate.
When tucked away, the screen is a 6.55-inch display and when it rolls up, it extends to a 7.11-inch display using a motor system in under 1.3 seconds. It leaves a screen that can be used as an always-on display.

The display is top-of-the-line as it is an LTP AMOLED panel rocking a resolution of 2290 by 1596 pixels with 100% DCI-P3 wide colour gamut.
The back is textured for easy grip and its pretty thin at 9.93mm.
Sadly, the Phantom Ultimate is a concept phone and it’ll be a few years before this format goes mainstream but we welcome the innovation.

It was only years ago, when foldables were unattainable and they’re now widely available with the likes of the just-launched Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5, OPPO Find N2 Flip and Find N3 Flip, and Phantom V Fold already in Kenya.
IDC reports that shipments of foldable smartphones has gone up by 50% from last year to 21.4 million units in 2023 and they project that the number will go as high as 48.1 million units in the next four years.
