WhatsApp is set to launch a feature that allows users to share files with contacts who are nearby. This feature is similar to Android’s Nearby Share and iOS Airdrop. Recently, Google and Samsung improved Nearby Share, and renamed it Quick Share.
Reports from WABetaInfo indicate it will provide a faster and more practical file transfer solution compared to alternatives such as sharing via cloud platforms. This will be done by enabling users to exchange files up to 2GB in size. Both users must be in the app’s “People Nearby” area and remain in situ for the duration of the exchange. Users will also be able to open WhatsApp and shake their device to view share requests
Liike most Meta platforms, End-to-end encryption will be implemented. This will enhance the safety of the file sharing feature. The encryption will also conceal and keep inaccessible phone numbers from being transferred to those not on the contact list.
The file share feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.2.20.
