Safaricom has launched a tech re-skilling program aimed at empowering youths with disabilities. The program, is designed to improve youth’s employability and offer scholarship opportunities. It will provide participants with skills needed to succeed in the growing IT industry.
The program, which is in its initial phase, will provide participants with a 23-week software engineering course at Moringa School. The training will not only focus on the technical skills but also include career mentorship and coaching. This will ensure that students are fully equipped for the job market. The initiative is part of Safaricom’s broader commitment to promoting inclusivity, especially in the digital sector.
By offering such opportunities, Safaricom is helping bridge the digital divide for persons with disabilities (PWDs). Thus, ensuring that they have access to the same opportunities as their non-disabled peers.
As part of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, Safaricom is integrating the inclusivity into every aspect of its operations. Florence Nyokabi, Safaricom’s Chief Human Resources Officer, emphasized the company’s goal of increasing the number of PWDs in their workforce, targeting 3.5% representation by 2030. Additionally, the initiative also aligns with Safaricom broader purpose of ensuring no one is left behind in the changing tech society.
The new tech re-skilling program builds upon Safaricom’s previous initiative, the IT bridge Academy. Which was launched in 2022 in collaboration with key partners. The IT Bridge Academy provided the PWDs (people with disabilities) with the chance to gain practical experience in the IT sector.
Through this initiative, safaricom is not just offering training, but also shaping the future where people with the disabilities can thrive in the tech space. By promoting an inclusive culture, Safaricom continues to empower youth and providing opportunities to many young people.
The company is strongly committed to achieving equal gender representation across all levels. It has set an ambitious target of reaching 50:50 senior management gender parity by 2025. Last but not least, this commitment underscores Safaricom’s dedication to fostering an inclusive workplace that values equity and representation.
