Microsoft’s ambitions to upgrade its Bing Image Creator with OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 PR16 model have hit an unexpected roadblock. Ahead of the holidays, Microsoft announced the new model would deliver images “twice as fast as before” and at a “higher quality.”
However, shortly after the rollout, user complaints flooded platforms like Reddit and X, forcing Microsoft to take action as per a report by TechCrunch.
The new model, PR16, was designed to enhance Bing Image Creator’s speed and image quality, marking an advancement in AI-powered visual tools. Microsoft’s goal was to provide users with an unparalleled image-generation experience.
Unfortunately, the release did not go as planned. Users reported poor image quality, unrealistic depictions, and a failure to accurately interpret text prompts, with many describing the outputs as inferior to the previous version.
Feedback on social media and forums was swift and overwhelmingly negative. “The DALL-E we used to love is gone forever,” lamented one Reddit user. “I’m using ChatGPT now because Bing has become useless for me,” wrote another.
The community’s frustration stemmed from PR16’s inability to replicate artistic styles, generate detailed human depictions, and interpret complex instructions, areas where previous versions excelled.
Microsoft’s Response
Acknowledging the backlash, Jordi Ribas, Microsoft’s head of search, announced a rollback to the earlier DALL-E 3 PR13 model. “We’ve been able to reproduce some of the issues reported and plan to revert to DALL-E 3 PR13 until we can fix them,” Ribas posted on X.
The rollback process, however, is slow. Microsoft began reverting the model over a week ago, and Ribas noted that it could take 2-3 more weeks for the PR13 model to be fully reinstated across Bing Image Creator.
While Microsoft hasn’t provided a detailed explanation, several key issues with PR16 have been highlighted:
- Lower Image Quality: Users noticed degraded visuals with less detail compared to PR13.
- Prompt Misinterpretation: The AI struggled to accurately reflect user instructions, leading to unsatisfactory results.
- Styling Challenges: Replicating specific artistic styles and creating realistic human figures became problematic.
Microsoft has committed to addressing the issues with PR16 before attempting a re-release.
For now, users can continue generating images with the DALL-E 3 PR13 model, which has been praised for its reliability and detailed outputs.
The rollback shows the challenges of using advanced AI in user tools. While PR16 promised improvements, stability and quality must come first. The return to PR13 provides a reliable experience for users. Many are eager to see if Microsoft can fix PR16 and deliver on its promise of faster, better image generation.
