OpenAI has started the rollout of a new Record Mode feature for ChatGPT Plus subscribers on macOS, enabling them to now record and transcribe online meetings for future reference.
Unveiled last month, Record Mode is designed to enable AI-powered note-taking during virtual conference calls. This is through a small “rec” button added to the ChatGPT app that begins recording the computer system’s audio once pressed.
Once the recording is over, the audio is uploaded to OpenAI’s servers, transcribed and structured notes from the clip are generated. The notes includes summaries, key points, action items and follow-up questions.
The main question is how the feature differs from any other free AI meeting assistants that seem to do the same. Well, the main one is that the ChatGPT Record Mode feature listens locally through the Mac.
However, it’s expected that many questions will arise regarding privacy with this feature, especially for users who prefer to have their meetings completely confidential.
In response to this, ChatGPT states:
Please make sure you check local laws and always get the right consents before recording others. You’re responsible for making sure that your use of record mode follows applicable laws, which may vary depending on where you and the people you’re recording are located.
As stated before, the feature will only be available for ChatGPT Plus subscribers for now, so it will be interesting to see if it is made available for free users in the future.
The feature comes at a time when OpenAI has been introducing several others for both free and premium users. The company has also revealed plans to expand its operations with an AI-powered web browser in a bid to challenge Google’s dominance in that particular market.
Like the new feature, the browser will also bring up privacy concerns since OpenAI intends to use it to gain direct access to user behavior and data. That is expected to be useful for the AI company to train its future models.
