Airtel Kenya has confirmed plans to enter the home fiber internet market, positioning itself to challenge established players in Kenya’s competitive broadband landscape. The reveal came during the breaking ground ceremony for East Africa’s largest data center in Tatu City, Nairobi.
A reliable source from the telco disclosed that fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) services are actively in development, though no specific launch timeline was provided. “Airtel fiber is something that we will embark upon in course of time,” they stated, adding that the company would announce launch details soon.
While fiber preparations continue, Airtel has enhanced its existing home broadband solution through the Airtel 5G Smart Connect device. This compact router works with 3G and 4G LTE networks but delivers 5G speeds.
It now comes with upgraded antenna technology for stronger indoor coverage and is priced at KES 2,000 per month for unlimited 15 Mbps connectivity.
The 5G Smart Connect stands out in Kenya’s market because it can connect up to 32 devices at once (16 on the X25 router model) and includes a battery backup that can provide up to 5 hours.
This feature helps households stay connected during frequent power outages and gives Airtel an edge over competitors that depend only on mains power.
Airtel’s fiber entry will considerably reshape Kenya’s home internet market, currently dominated by several established providers.
Safaricom leads with its fiber network covering major urban centers, while Zuku maintains a strong presence in residential areas through its cable infrastructure. JTL and numerous smaller ISPs also compete for market share, each targeting different customer segments.
The addition of Airtel’s fiber service will likely intensify pricing competition and service quality improvements across the sector.
Kenya’s growing demand for high-speed internet, driven by remote work trends and digital service adoption, creates favorable conditions for new market entrants.
Airtel’s established brand recognition and mobile subscriber base position it well to capture a large market share once fiber services launch.
