Microsoft has started rolling out a major update to the Photos app on Windows 11, introducing AI features designed to make managing large photo libraries much easier.
With version 2025.11090.25001.0, the app can now automatically categorize images into useful groups such as screenshots, receipts, identity documents, and notes.
The new AI-powered feature creates categories that appear in the navigation bar under “Categories,” making it simpler for users to jump directly to specific types of content.
The Photos app can also recognize and classify images regardless of the language on them. This means a receipt written in another language will still be sorted correctly, giving users a more reliable and efficient way to organize mixed photo collections.
Microsoft has also included flexibility in the system. Although AI does most of the sorting, users still have the option to fine-tune by adjusting categories or reassigning images, keeping their photo library organized and accurate.
Feature Only Available on Copilot+ PCs
However, there is one big limitation. Automatic photo categorization is available only on Copilot+ PCs, which come with powerful Neural Processing Units (NPUs) capable of handling advanced AI tasks.
Standard Windows 11 PCs without NPUs won’t support this feature, indicating Microsoft’s push to position Copilot+ PCs as the main choice for AI-powered tools and experiences.
Alongside categorization, Microsoft has added another major enhancement to the Photos app: Super Resolution. This feature upscales images, breathing new life into old or low-quality photos.
Super Resolution is supported on Snapdragon X chips, AMD Ryzen AI processors, and Intel Core Ultra 200 Series CPUs.
Although there are ongoing rumors about Intel extending Copilot+ PC capabilities to desktop hardware, for now, these features remain limited to laptops, tablets, and select mini-PCs.
