Airtel Kenya has announced free access to the Kenya Education Cloud and Elimika platforms, allowing teachers and students across the country to use the resources without incurring data costs.
The move, launched on World Teachers’ Day, is part of Airtel Africa’s $57 million partnership with UNICEF aimed at expanding digital learning under the “Accessible Learning Content” pillar.
The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) and the Ministry of Education.
Through the program, Airtel is providing zero-rated access to KICD’s Kenya Education Cloud and the Elimika teacher development platform. This ensures that teachers can access training materials and curriculum-aligned digital content without paying for data.
In addition, Airtel Africa’s UNICEF partnership supports 141 public primary schools in Kenya by providing each with 300 GB of monthly data, helping them integrate technology into classroom learning through government-issued tablets.
Bridging Digital Gaps in Education
Digital access remains limited in many parts of Kenya. National data shows that only 10.7% of households own a computer, and 23.8% have reliable internet connections.
Less than half of the country’s secondary schools have operational computer labs, and even fewer are connected to the internet. By removing data barriers, Airtel hopes it can make digital learning more sustainable, especially for rural schools that struggle with connectivity costs.
The Kenya Education Cloud provides educational resources such as video lessons, recorded sessions, and interactive materials from pre-primary to Grade 9, supporting the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Meanwhile, the Elimika platform focuses on teacher training and professional development, giving educators access to updated teaching methodologies and digital learning tools at no cost.
Airtel Kenya’s initiative ensures that students in remote areas can access the same online learning materials as those in urban centers. It also supports teachers in integrating digital tools into daily lessons, helping improve both learning outcomes and digital literacy.
