OpenAI’s next-generation AI video tool, Sora 2, is finally rolling out to Android users just weeks after debuting exclusively on Apple devices.
The app can now be downloaded through the Google Play Store in select countries, including the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
However, the global rollout remains slow and limited. OpenAI is continuing its gradual expansion strategy, meaning users outside these regions will need to wait a little longer before Sora 2 appears in their local Play Store listings.
Initially, OpenAI required new users to join a waitlist system or get an invite from a friend who already had access. That restriction has now been temporarily lifted in select regions like the US, Canada, Japan, and South Korea.
This means users in those countries can download the app and start using it right away, without needing an invite code. However, OpenAI noted that this open access is temporary, and the wait-list could return without warning.
With Sora 2, users can create short, cinematic clips by typing text prompts or uploading reference images, and the app can even insert users into AI-generated scenes, blurring the line between real and synthetic media.
Controversy and New Safeguards
Despite its impressive capabilities, Sora 2 has not escaped controversy. OpenAI has faced lawsuits and backlash for allowing the generation of videos that mimic real-world celebrities and historical figures.
In response, OpenAI has introduced stricter content safeguards. Celebrities must now opt in for their likeness to be used, and new moderation tools limit how much users can feature real-life figures who have opted out.
For now, Android users in select countries can finally experience what Apple users have enjoyed for weeks. The big question is when Sora 2 will roll out globally, allowing more users to explore its full potential.
