The long-awaited arrival of the native WhatsApp app on the Apple Watch is now a reality. Released yesterday, this update could change how users interact with WhatsApp on their wrist.
Previously, Apple Watch users could receive basic message alerts, but full chat functionality was missing. The new version brings full message previews (even for long texts), voice message recording and sending, emoji reactions, call notifications, clearer images and stickers, and access to more of the chat history.
The app supports Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 10 or above. With the Series 4 first released in 2018, that means most users of recent Apple Watches should be eligible.
With the new update, users can now leave their iPhone in their bag or on the desk and still read, reply and react to WhatsApp messages straight from their watch.
This is especially useful in contexts where pulling out a phone is awkward or undesirable like a meeting, on a run, or traveling. For regions like Kenya and across Africa, where WhatsApp is deeply integral to communication both social and business, the ability to glance at and reply to chats from the wrist adds meaningful convenience.
That said, there are still caveats. A connected iPhone with WhatsApp installed is still required for the Watch app to function properly.
Some users may hope for a fully independent Apple Watch WhatsApp experience (where the watch alone handles chats without the paired phone nearby) but that is not yet the case.
Hopefully, the new WhatsApp app for Apple Watch brings the messaging experience much closer to what users expect from the phone version.
It would be expected to close a notable gap in wearable-messaging functionality and align WhatsApp more closely with modern wrist-based interaction. As always, given the pace of app updates, we can expect further features down the line.
