YouTube is once again leaning into generative AI, and this time, it’s coming for how you discover music.
The platform has begun rolling out an AI-powered playlist generator for YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium subscribers on iOS and Android, allowing users to create personalized playlists using simple text or voice prompts.
Imagine it as less scrolling and more describing the vibe: “raging death metal,” “laid-back background music,” or “progressive Afrobeats for a chill party.”
Built directly into YouTube Music, the feature lives under the Library tab, where users can tap a new “AI playlist” option. From there, YouTube’s natural language processing does the heavy lifting, translating moods, genres, and ideas into curated music collections in seconds.
“YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium users can now instantly turn an idea, mood, or genre into a personalized playlist using our new AI playlist feature,” the company said in a recent update.
This move places YouTube firmly in the middle of an intensifying AI arms race among streaming platforms. Spotify has been testing AI playlists driven by text prompts in select regions, Amazon Music is experimenting with its “Maestro” tool in the US, and Deezer continues to expand AI-led curation for premium users.
The difference here is that YouTube’s advantage lies in its massive music catalogue and user behavior data across video and audio. If all goes well, this will be a game changer.
Beyond convenience, the rollout signals that generative AI features are increasingly becoming premium-only perks, strengthening YouTube’s case for paid subscriptions.
Just recently, the platform decided to limit full song lyrics for free-tier users, where only a handful of lyric views are allowed before prompting listeners to upgrade to YouTube Premium, clearly designed to encourage more subscriptions.
As of early 2026, Google reports 325 million paying users across YouTube Premium and Google One, showcasing the company’s growing reliance on subscription revenue.
