For those among us who have waited with bated breath for Nokia to finally introduce Windows phone in East Africa, you can now release your stomach muscles. Starting with the low end Lumia 510, Nokia is making that a reality. Lumia 510 is now selling at several retailers in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania via several retailers. Pricing for this Windows phone is as follows:
Kshs 16,900 for Kenya
Tzsh 355,000 in Tanzania
UGX 600,000 in Uganda
The Lumia 510 is available in three colours, these being black, white and red and runs Windows 7.5 Mango. Windows 7.5 devices are expected to get an upgrade to Windows 7.8 possibly in the first quarter of 2013. Windows 7.8 upgrade will bring the feel and some of the functionality experienced in Windows phone 8. Time for the local tech scene to start talking live tiles in reference to what is in the market as opposed to what is out there in other markets. This announcement by Nokia will mean local support by Nokia of Windows phone as opposed to what we have been previously experiencing with grey markets. Lumias 800, 900, 820 and 920 follow shortly after in local launch, possibly as Christmas gifts.
“We are pleased to announce the availability of the Nokia Lumia 510 in East Africa,” says Bruce Howe, General Manager for Nokia East Africa. “There has been so much excitement globally about our Lumia smartphones and it is great to now be able to bring them to the East African market, starting today with the Nokia Lumia 510. This builds on our commitment to bring Lumia to lower price points and welcome more consumers to the Windows Phone experience”.
