President-elect Donald Trump has tapped tech titan Elon Musk and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a new government agency with a lofty mandate – the Department of Government Efficiency, or “DOGE” for short.
The duo’s primary mission will be to “dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies” in an effort to streamline the bloated federal machinery.
This unlikely pairing has until July 4, 2026 – the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence – to work their magic and deliver “a smaller government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy” as Trump’s perfect gift to the nation.
Musk, the visionary behind Tesla and SpaceX, has long championed the need to rein in government excess. He’s floated the idea of cutting $2 trillion from the budget, though experts warn this could have severe financial consequences.
Still, the outspoken executive is undeterred, declaring that the DOGE department (seriously, that acronym must be a joke, right?) will trigger “shockwaves through the system” and target the “massive waste and fraud” in the government’s $6.5 trillion annual spending.
Ramaswamy, a former presidential candidate known for his contrarian views, will bring his own brand of entrepreneurial zeal to the task. Together, this “efficiency couple” plans to “liberate our economy and make the U.S. Government accountable to ‘WE THE PEOPLE.'”
While the full scope of the DOGE department remains unclear, Trump’s statement hints at an “entrepreneurial approach to government never seen before,” with Musk and Ramaswamy providing “advice and guidance from outside of government” to partner with the White House and Office of Management & Budget.
Musk, for his part, seems eager to get started, suggesting some fire merchandise is already in the works. And the markets have already responded, with the price of Dogecoin, the cryptocurrency that inspired the department’s name, doubling since the announcement.
Whether the DOGE department can truly revolutionize the notoriously sluggish federal bureaucracy remains to be seen. But with two of the country’s most unconventional innovators at the helm, we’re certain this is going to be anything but business as usual in Washington.
