Christmas has come early for Android developers, thanks to Google launching the first developer preview of Android 16 (codenamed “Baklava”) well ahead of its traditional schedule. This early release, which landed yesterday, promises to bring some exciting new features to the platform.
Breaking from its February tradition, Google’s early preview release is part of a larger initiative to accelerate Android’s development cycle. Matthew McCullough, Android Developer Head, explained this shift as “the start of Android having more frequent API releases as part of our effort to drive faster innovation in apps and devices.”
The new timeline aims to have Android 16 ready for public release in Q2 2025, potentially as early as June 3, though this date isn’t set in stone. While the Android 16 developer preview is specially created for developers (obviously), it will introduce several noteworthy improvements. Let’s check out a few of these.
Embedded Photo Picking
The most visible change is a revamped photo picker that can now be embedded directly within apps. This update addresses a long-standing issue where many apps avoided using Android’s privacy-focused photo picker because it couldn’t be integrated seamlessly into their interfaces. The new implementation maintains privacy protections while still offering a more natural user experience.
Medical Records Integration
Health Connect, Android’s health data platform, is getting a significant upgrade with support for FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) format medical records. This addition could transform how medical apps interact with your health data, similar to Apple Health’s capabilities on iOS. Don’t worry about privacy, though. Apps will need explicit user consent to access these records.
Privacy Sandbox Updates
The latest version of Privacy Sandbox continues Google’s efforts to reform Android’s advertising system with stronger privacy protections, though specific changes remain under wraps for now.
If you’re feeling adventurous and own a recent Pixel device (Pixel 6a through Pixel 9 Pro XL, including Fold and Tablet), you can install the preview. However, Google strongly cautions that this early build isn’t meant for daily use. Current Android 15 QPR2 Beta users should note that upgrading requires a full device reset.
Google has also outlined an ambitious release schedule as follows:
- Developer Preview 2: December 2024
- Beta 1: January 2025
- Beta 2: February 2025
- Beta 3 (Platform Stability): March 2025
- Beta 4: April 2025
- Final Release: Q2 2025
The accelerated timeline could mean faster Android updates for third-party phones in 2025, potentially addressing one of Android’s long-standing pain points: delayed updates for non-Pixel devices.
Though this first preview might seem light on flashy features, it’s laying the groundwork for what’s to come. As we move into the beta phase in early 2025, we can expect to see more user-facing features and improvements that will define Android’s next major evolution.
