The Communication Authority of Kenya (CA) has today conducted raids in Eastleigh, Nairobi, cracking down on unlicensed courier services. CA officials, working alongside officers from the National Police Service, arrested 9 suspects during the operation.
According to a public statement by the authority, the raid “collected samples of parcels, receipts, and consignment books to be used as court exhibits.”
During the operation, authorities found the following businesses were offering unlicensed parcel and courier services:
- Al-Safa Parcel Services
- Falcon Fastforward Parcel Services
- Turkana Parcel Services
- Ramadhan Parcel
- Mandera Parcel Stores
- Skyway Centre
- Sharks Solution Parcel Services
- Rahma Bus Services Limited
The suspects were held at the California Police Station and will be arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts. CA was implementing its mandate under Section 67 of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998.
This section deals with offenses related to postal services. It states that anyone who, without a valid license, carries, delivers, collects, or provides any service connected to sending letters or postal items commits an offense. If found guilty, the person may be fined up to KES 200,000, jailed for up to one year, or face both penalties.
CA has also taken this opportunity to warn the public on the choice of courier service providers, stating,
“The Authority also cautions members of the public to seek parcel and courier services from CA-licensed providers only. Dealing with licensed parcel and courier operators safeguards consumers, ensures secure and reliable delivery, and supports lawful and sustainable growth of the sector.”
