Apple Is Building an AI Answer Engine Into Siri to Rival ChatGPT

Apple is preparing for one of its biggest updates to Siri since its debut. According to a Bloomberg report published on September 3, the company is working on a major AI-powered upgrade to its voice assistant, scheduled for release in spring 2026.

The centerpiece of this overhaul is a feature internally referred to as World Knowledge Answers. Unlike today’s Siri, which often struggles with complex or open-ended questions, the new system will act as a comprehensive answer engine, delivering more accurate, context-aware responses.

When Siri first launched in 2011, it was considered revolutionary. However, competitors like Google Assistant, ChatGPT, and Perplexity AI have since outpaced it in terms of intelligence and usefulness.

Apple’s new approach is designed to close that gap by making Siri more conversational and better equipped to handle nuanced requests.

The “answer engine” will allow Siri to go beyond simple reminders or basic queries. For instance, it could summarize articles, interpret images, or provide detailed explanations without redirecting users to Safari or third-party apps.

This positions Siri to compete directly with modern AI chatbots while staying tightly integrated within the Apple ecosystem.

Privacy Will Remain a Core Feature

As with other Apple Intelligence features introduced at WWDC 2024, privacy is expected to remain a central pillar of this rollout.

Apple plans to handle queries using on-device AI where possible, while more complex tasks will be managed through Private Cloud Compute, ensuring that personal data is not used for advertising or sold to third parties.

This privacy-first stance could give Apple a competitive edge at a time when trust in AI systems is under scrutiny.

Reports also suggest that Apple may leverage Google’s Gemini AI models to enhance World Knowledge Answers. If true, this collaboration could combine Apple’s user-focused design and privacy infrastructure with Google’s powerful large language models.

Why Did Apple Take So Long?

The AI-powered Siri upgrade was initially expected sooner, but Apple delayed the release to fine-tune performance and reliability.

Now slated for the first half of 2026, the rollout is expected to align with an iOS 26.4 update. Analysts believe this timeline gives Apple more room to ensure the feature can scale effectively across hundreds of millions of devices worldwide.
