Just the other day, we looked at the performance of mobile internet in Kenya. Some interesting bits were highlighted, such as Mombasa receiving the fastesr speeds compared to other cities and towns in the country.
For fixed internet, performance appears to favour broadband provider Faiba.
For instance, it recorded the fasted fixed broadband speeds in Q2, 2022 with a median download speed of 24.94 Mbps.
Here is how the rest of the competitors faired:
Provider | Median speeds (Mbps) |
Faiba | 24.94 |
AccessKenya | 9.04 |
Safaricom | 8.20 |
Telkom | 7.47 |
Liquid Home | 6.91 |
Unwired Communications | 5.94 |
Wananchi Group’s Zuku does not feature in the group. Also in this case, Safaricom has the biggest market share, although it started operations later than the rest.
In terms of latency, Faiba still leads the pack at 7ms.
The rest of the providers rank as follows:
Provider | Median latency (ms) |
Faiba | 7 |
Unwired Communications | 10 |
Telkom | 14 |
Liquid Home | 16 |
Safaricom | 16 |
AccessKenya | 17 |
Lower latency means that the internet responds faster to an action. This makes a lot of sense for online gamers who want to have seamless experience during playtime.
In terms of consistency, Faiba is still at the top.
We found that Faiba had the highest Consistency in Kenya during Q2 2022, with 50.6% of results showing at least a 25 Mbps minimum download speed and 3 Mbps minimum upload speed – Ookla
Provider | Consistency (%) |
Faiba | 7 |
AccessKenya | 10 |
Telkom | 14 |
Liquid Home | 16 |
Safaricom | 16 |
Unwired Communications | 17 |
Lastly, and similar to mobile internet performance, Mombasa sits at the top of the charts in terms of city speeds.
City | Median download (Mbps) |
Mombasa | 12.03 |
Nairobi | 9.27 |
Nakuru | 7.68 |
Eldoret | 7.31 |
Kisumu | 6.89 |
