Opera, the Norway-based company renowned for its innovative web browsers, has unveiled Opera Air, a new browser designed to promote mindfulness and mental well-being during internet use. This initiative addresses the growing concern over digital overwhelm, aiming to transform the browsing experience into a more serene and focused activity.
Opera Air introduces several features collectively known as “Boosts,” which are designed to help users maintain calm and concentration. These include ambient soundscapes, binaural beats, and guided break exercises. The browser’s semi-transparent design and floating sidebar provide easy access to these mindfulness tools, creating an environment that encourages relaxation and focus.
The Boosts feature offers a variety of calming sounds, such as ambient music and binaural beats—audio tracks where slightly different frequencies are played in each ear, creating a perceived third frequency in the brain.
This technique is believed to enhance relaxation and concentration. Users can customize their experience by adjusting the music level, ambient sound, and frequency of the binaural beats, with sessions ranging from 15 minutes to indefinite durations.
To combat prolonged periods of screen time, Opera Air includes a “Break” reminder feature. An icon in the sidebar gradually fades over a user-defined period, signaling when it’s time to take a break.
During these intervals, the browser offers guided breathing exercises, neck stretches, full-body scans, and meditations lasting up to 15 minutes. Users can choose between two guiding voices, Emma or Alex, to lead these sessions.

The browser retains essential features from its predecessors, such as a built-in ad blocker, a free VPN, and access to the ChatGPT-powered Aria AI assistant.
The browser’s minimalist Scandinavian design, featuring frosted glass aesthetics, contributes to a tranquil user experience. This design choice aligns with the browser’s goal of reducing digital clutter and promoting mental well-being.
According to Opera, the development of the browser was informed by a survey revealing that 58% of participants felt overwhelmed or stressed while browsing the web, and 83% expressed a desire for their browser to enhance their daily well-being. In response, Opera has crafted a browser that not only facilitates internet navigation but also serves as a tool for mental health support.
