Mark Zuckerberg’s company, Meta, is reportedly working to develop its first smartwatch, a project that had been abandoned since 2022.
According to reports, the smartwatch is now set for a September 2025 launch, sporting features like built-in cameras and Meta AI-powered capabilities.
The speculated launch date aligns with the company’s Meta Connect event that is scheduled to kick off on 17 September in the US. The device’s hardware will be supplied by Chinese firm Huaqin Technology.
The recently revived project is Meta’s second try at building its smartwatch. Under the codename “Milan”, the device was initially expected to feature a curved-edge display, a selfie camera, and a physical navigation button.
When early leaks about the smartwatch began to emerge, it was said to feature health tracking, messaging, and fitness capabilities. Reports also suggested it might run on a custom Android version rather than Wear OS.
Its most distinctive element, however, was expected to be a dual-camera setup, one on the front and another on the back of the main case. In 2023, leaked renders gave us a glimpse of what the device might look like.

This latest rumor surfaces just days after news broke that Meta is developing a different kind of wrist-worn device. Unlike a typical smartwatch, this wristband is designed to let users control a computer.
As reported by TechCrunch, the band uses surface electromyography (sEMG) to read electrical signals from muscle movements, enabling gesture-based actions like opening apps or moving a cursor.
All these features were intended to make the device interactive with its users. However, issues related to the second camera disrupted this function, contributing to the project’s cancellation.
Whether we see even another prototype of the watch come September is still very uncertain. If it were launched, the Meta smartwatch could be a major step in the company’s attempt to venture more into the hardware sector and bring competition to a market dominated by Apple and Samsung.
