Some YouTube Premium users are experiencing ads despite paying for an ad-free experience, and YouTube has acknowledged the issue, stating that it shouldn’t be happening.
As noted, YouTube Premium is supposed to provide an ad-free experience, including the removal of pre-roll and mid-roll ads. However, several users on Reddit, such as @Turbulent_Coconut_28 and @the_last_lemurian, have complained about seeing ads in both video playback and the Home feed.
The situation is further complicated by YouTube’s testing of the “Premium Lite” plan in some regions like Germany, which is a more affordable option that still includes some ads. However, there’s no clear confirmation that users seeing ads are on the Lite plan or if there’s a wider issue affecting the full Premium subscription.
According to a Reddit thread, one user received an explanation from YouTube support stating that “promotional ads can sometimes appear for specific partnerships or limited-time offers,” such as an ad for YouTube TV’s NFL Sunday Ticket. The support representative also mentioned that this could depend on factors like location, viewing history, or participation in particular marketing campaigns.
However, they emphasized that this is not typical behavior for Premium members, and users encountering such ads should contact support for further assistance.
In terms of the Premium benefits, YouTube also highlighted that subscribers might receive exclusive rewards or offers, but these should appear on the benefits page—not within the videos themselves. This suggests that any disruptions to the ad-free experience are likely isolated cases tied to marketing efforts rather than a widespread issue with the Premium service.
Given the pattern of complaints, it seems this might be an isolated bug or glitch in YouTube’s system, and YouTube could be investigating it.
What Might be the Cause?
This discrepancy might be due to a few different factors, such as:
- Account or subscription issues: There might be a problem with the account, such as expired payments or mismatches between accounts linked to the subscription.
- Device-specific problems: The issue might only affect certain devices or apps, so users on smart TVs or certain browsers might be more prone to seeing ads despite their Premium status.
- A/B testing or system glitches: YouTube often runs tests on users to experiment with different features, and there could be a glitch or bug in how the ads are being displayed to Premium users.
- Content-specific ads: In rare cases, ads may appear on specific types of content, such as YouTube videos, that are monetized by the creator and marked as eligible for ads.
